Planning a trip in one’s own vehicle represents a greater independence to move towards the desired destination; however, to do it with total confidence it is best to make a review and thus avoid inconveniences on the road.

Each driver must perform, before the trip, an ABC to his vehicle to drive calmly and thus avoid accidents on the road.

What is an ABC?

The ABC is nothing more than a revision, cleaning and change (depending on the case) of the parts of the vehicle, to preserve its good functioning. The procedure should be performed when the vehicle is cold, so you can open the hood and check the internal parts.

What should we check?

Brakes

The state of the brakes is decisive for whether you go on a trip or not. Check that all the elements (discs, shoes, drums) work properly, as well as see that the fluid level of the brake cylinders is as recommended by the manufacturer.

Tires

The main points to check are: correct air pressure (recommended by the manufacturer), alignment and balancing, which will allow greater stability, maneuverability and less gas consumption. Tires should be rotated among themselves to extend the life with an even and regular wear; and, also remember that you should always have an emergency tire.

When returning from a long trip, the tires should be checked again, since factors such as heat, generated by friction with the asphalt, makes them expand and their pressure increases.

Suspension

If you are going to travel on uneven ground or off-road, it is important to check that elements such as shock absorbers, stabilizer bar, springs, ball joints, among others, are in good working order to maintain the stability of the car.

Windshield Wipers

The vision that the driver may have is important, therefore, check that the feathers evacuate the water correctly and that, in the same way, the water level of the windshield wiper is adequate. Whenever possible, use water combined with a special windshield washer detergent.

Battery

Without it, the car is useless, so it is necessary to make a check with the mechanic to see if the liquids (distilled and demineralized water) have the right amounts.

Lights and guides

You should check that your low, medium and high beams are working properly, so that you have good vision while driving at night or in the rain. The guides serve so that other drivers can place you on the road.

Oil level

Check that the oil is at the maximum level when the bayonet is removed. It is also advisable to check the oil level in the gearbox and the transfer (if it is 4×4), just as a precaution.

What to bring?

It is necessary to carry tools, first aid kit, battery cables, fire extinguisher, jack, wrench, emergency tire, reflective tape, tire gauge and safety triangles.

One of the most important factors that we must not forget is to have the documentation in order: registration up to date, license in force and vehicle inspection performed.

Other recommendations?

Plan the route, check the alerts in official media, there are also applications that indicate places to rest and location of gas stations.
